Sounil Yu is YL Ventures' CISO-in-Residence. In this role, he imparts his 30+ years of industry experience towards the firm’s ideation support of up and coming entrepreneurs, vetting candidates and concepts in the pipeline, amplifying the firm’s value-add services to its portfolio companies and publishing important thought leadership on the cybersecurity sphere’s most pressing topics.
Sounil proactively supports cybersecurity entrepreneurs at every stage of their development, advises early founders on the industry’s greenfield opportunities and helps YL Venture portfolio companies remove communication roadblocks with customers, refine their positioning, and validate their go-to-market strategies.
Previously, Sounil was the Chief Security Scientist at Bank of America, leading a cross-functional team focused on driving innovation and thriving startup culture to meet emerging cybersecurity needs, to serve as a challenge function, and to be a change agent driving unconventional thinking and alternative approaches to hard problems in security. In this role, he worked with many startups to focus their solutions towards hard problems in security and navigate them through the proof-of-value and procurement process.
Sounil is the creator of the highly influential Cyber Defense Matrix and the DIE Resiliency Framework. He serves on the Board of the FAIR Institute and SCVX, co-chairs Art into Science: A Conference on Defense and has 22 granted patents covering topics such as threat modeling, intrusion deception, endpoint monitoring, tracking media leaks, attributing devices to organizations, detecting logic bombs, and security portfolio optimization. In addition to CISSP and GSEC certifications, Sounil holds a master's in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech and a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and Economics from Duke University.
